I came to machine learning through industry rather than straight through school. After a BSc in Electrical Engineering at FAST-NUCES, four years of building: application consulting at Techlogix, where I contributed to a digital lending platform for banks across Pakistan; software development at GrocerApp; and technical project management at ZeePalm, running project lifecycles and giving technical direction on machine learning and web work.
In 2024 I moved to Oulu, Finland, for the MSc in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Oulu, on the Artificial Intelligence track: machine vision, deep learning, NLP, LLMs. It finished in July 2026 with a thesis at Valamis, building and evaluating a retrieval-augmented LLM assistant for their corporate learning platform. The thesis is open access.
The thread through the recent work is evaluation. A retrieval pipeline is easy to demo and hard to trust, and the part I find most interesting is knowing whether it actually works: LLM-as-judge setups validated against human ratings, retrieval metrics reported plainly, baselines that are allowed to win. That mindset carried the thesis, the recipe retrieval project, and the railway delays paper.
Home base is Oulu, 65°N. I have been learning Finnish alongside the degree, 15 ECTS of it so far. Around the studies I volunteer at the city's startup and research events: Polar Bear Pitching, Techstars Startup Weekend Oulu, the ECSA2026 and AIS25 conferences.
